The story that really got me was the first one, "Father's Day," which has a scene of the zombie father literally twisting the head off of one of his kids. Beheadings were a particular demon of mine in my childhood, and this one was exceptionally graphic, rendered in all of Wrightson's gory splendor.T Everett Nickersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10653419444263144890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33622860.post-69958616586304258962010-01-11T13:05:31.564-05:002010-01-11T13:05:31.564-05:00Interesting, Todd. Perhaps it's because I...Hey Joe, Todd here.

Perhaps it's because I've always had difficulty reining in my emotions, but when I was a child everything scared me, including one notable comic--the graphic adaptation of Creepshow. I recall that I read it at a family gathering (scary enough, right?), but it was a weird time in my life anyway. I'd just moved to a new state, had almost no friends and was dealing with some health problems.

These days nothing much in the way of media scares me (my life is generally disturbing enough without requiring artificial sources to get my hackles up anyway), but when i was a kid I was the mercy of every shadow, every creepy noise. Creepshow was one of those things that I couldn't put down, ven though I knew I'd be up all night freaked out of head, and that turned out to be true.T Everett Nickersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10653419444263144890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33622860.post-89089961875383763392009-08-25T21:42:12.964-04:002009-08-25T21:42:12.964-04:00Trevor,

For a visual medium it's hard for artists to hold back and NOT show the monster with dripping fangs.

I'll be looking for that comic. I looked it up and it's by L.B. Cole, an artist who I was totally unfamiliar with (having seen it everywhere by never realizing it was by one guy). Here's a gallery of his covers in case anyone else wants to see his stuff:
http://www.samuelsdesign.com/comics/lbcole_gallery.html

Thanks for the tip!Joe Willyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12061116533355938097noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33622860.post-67145879850344832872009-08-24T12:27:23.837-04:002009-08-24T12:27:23.837-04:00Few comics are scary because they rely so heavily ...Few comics are scary because they rely so heavily on cliched imagery and storylines. They also make the mistake of putting too much up front to look at. That makes them enjoyable, but not scary.

However, there are real exceptions. There are those that actually are unnerving.

I would recommend getting a hold of an old comic from 1962, a one shot from Dell called TALES FROM THE TOMB. Not to be confused with the other comic with that title. By the time you read through to the end of the third story TURNABOUT, you will know whether comics can actually be scary or not.Morbidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03605497974434648896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33622860.post-61092146122782426512009-08-03T01:21:12.233-04:002009-08-03T01:21:12.233-04:00Nice work, I love how the story is communicated wi...Nice work, I love how the story is communicated without words =) Keep it up!Jason Derogahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03708506966597589402noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33622860.post-62961004446790248622009-07-22T17:38:15.447-04:002009-07-22T17:38:15.447-04:00What you need is a bottle-of-scotch-in-the-bottom-...What you need is a bottle-of-scotch-in-the-bottom-drawer editor who will kick you in the ass instead of that pussy I hired.James Hitchcockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11568297017339064993noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33622860.post-88904371311704586272009-07-22T17:34:34.947-04:002009-07-22T17:34:34.947-04:00Maybe you should go with it, and create it in all ...Maybe you should go with it, and create it in all the ways you've thought about. Because society in general feels these industries are really unimportant in the grand scheme of things, they are all run like social clubs rather than businesses.

Since those in control show no interest in changing comics, it is up to the consumer.
